I think the view is great in the bottom picture may be if the picture was taken earlier in the day with the sun rising you could get more color.
HDR seems to work best with the changing colors of the sky (sunrise/sunset...) but you tried it so just count it as an experience with knowledge gained, even if you don't like the outcome!
This is my attempt at HDRI. These pictures didn't turn out that great though!!!
